Rheinland-Pfalz Youth Orchestra (Germany) in South Africa and Botswana
The Rheinland-Pfalz Youth Orchestra from Germany will be performing at the Maitisong Theatre in Gaborone on 6 October 19h00.
The Rheinland-Pfalz Youth Orchestra from Germany will be performing in South Africa and Botswana, with a programme that includes works by South African composer Hendrik Hofmeyr, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Ludwig von Beethoven. The concert will be conducted by the South African conductor Albert Horne, with Megan-Geoffrey Prins as the soloist. The concert in Gaborone will be at the Maitisong Theatre on 6 October 19h00.
The Rheinland-Pfalz Youth Orchestra was founded in 1973 and is one of the best ensembles of its kind in Germany. In addition to performing regularly in the Rheinland-Pfalz district, the orchestra also often travels abroad to perform and cultivate new audiences. 20 years after their successful debut tour to South Africa, the LJO will return to Pretoria, Johannesburg, Stellenbosch and Cape Town in October, this time with an additional performance at the Maitisong Theatre in Gaborone, Botswana.
The first half of the concert explores a connection between Europe and South Africa. „Ingoma“ was written by the South African composer Hendrik Hofmeyr in 1998, and incorporates versions of „Thula, babana“ and „Uqongqot'hwane“ – both traditional and iconic South African melodies. This will be followed by the South African pianist Megan-Geoffrey Prins playing Rachmaninoff's well-loved 2nd Piano Concerto. Beethoven's majestic 3rd Symphony, nicknamed the „Eroica“, will form the second half of the programme. The concert will be conducted by the South African-born conductor Albert Horne, who is currently engaged at the Hessian State Theatre in Wiesbaden, Germany.
The mission of the youth orchestra is to foster the musical talent of young and gifted instrumentalists by introducing them to orchestra practice and by improving their musical capabilities through extensive coaching. To ensure the quality of its ensemble, auditions are held to select the orchestra members. The high level of accomplishment the orchestra has achieved can be seen and heard in its frequent radio and television performances, recorded albums, CD productions and reviews in major German newspapers.
